World Food Day

Wednesday 16 October is World Food Day, an initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

Held on 16 October each year the day aims to raise awareness of global food insecurity issues, such as hunger and poverty.

The United Nations reports:

  • Globally, nearly one billion people go to sleep hungry every night, and
  • More than two billion people are chronically malnourished.

According to hunger relief organisation Foodbank:

  • 2.2 million Australians live in poverty
  • 70 per cent of welfare agencies are experiencing an increase in the number of people seeking food, and
  • Low income families are the largest group seeking food support from welfare agencies.

The Macarthur Future Food Forum are celebrating the achievements of their program and discussing the future of food security, quality and sustainability in the Macarthur region, moving towards the recognition that “healthy food is a human right”.
